I never had the benefit of working directly with Roy since I started at GMU in 2005, but his presence alone at our colloquium sessions was inspiring, encouraging, and enriching. Having started the program with plenty of nervousness and doubt about if I really should be trying to get a PhD at all, his comments at our colloquium and as a visitor to Clio classes revealed his desire to see us succeed, and made me feel at home. It was a pleasure and honor to have benefited from his knowledge.
